Japan Eco Marine Power proposed a new concept: EnergySail. This concept is actually a sail solar panel that allows ships to use wind and solar power to generate electricity to reduce fuel costs and environmental pollution. The company said that the device can be installed on large cargo ships, ferries, and Coast Guard patrol boats, and its automatic control system can make good use of wind energy and solar energy.
It is understood that with its help, large ships such as cruise ships can save 10% to 20% of fuel each year. However, to complete EnergySail, a combination of optimized hull design techniques, fuel cell technology, and advanced electric propulsion systems is required. EnergySail can even save 40% or more of the fuel if the design is ideal.
In addition to energy savings, with EnergySail, the emissions of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides will also be reduced, which will serve as a green bag.
The company’s Greg Atkinson said: “We have already started testing in our lab in Osaka and we believe that this concept will become a reality in the near future. If it is fast, EnergySail will be able to achieve it in 2013.”
